For the first time, I had to tell my child about September 11, 2001. I found myself choking up, and he noticed, too.
We had a good conversation about what happened that day - I had to define a lot of words, or choose a different way of explaining. Terrorists and hijackings aren't in a normal 8 year old's vocabulary.
And while he can't grasp the emotion, the tragedy, the change, the helplessness of that day. I remember, I can't forget why we call September 11 of every year, Patriot's Day.
I'm wondering if any of you have talked to your children about this day -- if you have, please comment and tell me how you did it and how they responded.

Good for you Jamie. I know it was difficult for all of us that day on September 11. Thank you for being such a great mom. Love, mom
We were driving through a small town in Oregon on 9-11 a few years ago. The town was decked out in patriotic colors. But the thing that caught my eye was the banners on lamp posts. They said, "We will never forget... but we have."
I got to thinking that the sting of watching television that morning has been dampened by time. Thanks for your comments about keeping the meaning fresh.
