Homework, BLAH!

Homework is usually the worst part of my day. I do not enjoy having to sit with Jayden and constantly nag him to stay on task. Sometimes he is great and can do every bit of it without any help, and sometimes I have to practically do it for him. (No comments please. Both of us making out of it alive is more important to me than whether or not my son can read or write.)
Tonight we had a rough time getting it done. After about an hour of trying to get him to fill in a blank to make a "sight word" (words he has had to know since Kindergarten), he had to write 3 facts about Martin Luther King, Jr. using complete sentences, punctuation, and spelling. I know he knows who MLK, Jr. is... Jayden has talked about him around the dinner table many times, excited to share with us what he has learned in class, etc. Seriously, tonight was like pulling teeth to try to get him to remember anything!! I asked him if MLk, Jr. was a man at the carnival selling cotton candy to little kids? No! hahaha! Was he the man who traveled on a ship and discovered America? No!! hahaha! Was he the man who went to Italy and ate spaghetti and meatballs for 100 days straight? NO!! hahaha! So who was he??
The rest of our conversation went something like this:
Me: Was he a preacher or a minister?
Jay: I don't know.
Me (having one of my, "Just get it over with" moments): He was a preacher. So write, Martin Luther King, Jr. was a preacher.
Jay: How do you spell Martin? Luther? King? Jr.?
Me (inwardly screaming with the pain that was going on in my head): Capital M, artin. Capital L, uther. Capital K, ing. Comma. Capital J, r.
Jay: how do you spell creature?
Me: Why do you want to spell Creature?
Jay: You said he was a creature.
Me, laughing,: NO!! Preacher! Do you know what a preacher is?
Jay: No.
Me: Let's start over. What did MLK, Jr do?
Jay: He helped people.
Me: How did he help people?
Jay: Maakee bbeetterrr choiiiccess???
Me: No.
Jay: He helped black and white people get together.
Me, thinking, now we are getting somewhere!! also thinking that it was Spike Lee who helped black and white people "get together", but that's a different post.: So write that!
Jay: How do you spell it?
I won't put you through all of that again. So, one sentence down, 2 to go!
Me: What else did he do?
Jay: He got shot and killed.
Me: So write it. What else?
Jay: He won that silver thing.
Me: I don't know what silver thing your talking about.
Jay, pounding his head: Oh, shoot! You know... that silver prize thing!
Me: The Nobel Peace Prize?
Jay: YES! That's it!

You Probably know the rest:
Jay: How do you spell it?

Reminds me of when I taught first grade and had to do that with 20+ kids for all subjects! I don't miss that!
